Here you can find the main bird watching spots located in Algarve, accessible to handicapped and disabled wheelchair users. Wheelchair access has been analysed, hence the access conditions for everybody, disabled or not.
You will find information on how to get there, if there is a watching hut on site, aswell as the conditions in what concerns accessibility, pavement and possible difficulties.
There is also a small description of the most common species found.

Species

The Algarve due its location and habitat diversity supports a high bird diversity which makes that a lot of foreign birdwatcher visit the reagion every year in search of the local specialties, mainly water birds.

On the 3 main bird hides of the region it's possible to see a great number of species. Some are presented next:

Quinta do Lago
The Quinta do Lago bird hides mainly the one near the Sao Lourenço lagoon allow you to see almost every species of ducks present in the Algarve being Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina) on of the most interesting ones. It's also one of the best spots to watch Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio porphyrio), Hoopoe (Upupa epops), Azure-winged Magpie (Cyanopica cyana) e Cetti's warbler (Cettia cetti).

Vilamoura
Both bird hides at Parque Ambiental de Vilamoura are located near lagoons with rich aquatic vegetation making them good to see ducks such as the rare Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca) and other species are easy to see as the Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) or the Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus).

Lagoa dos Salgados
Lagoa dos Salgados it's a reasonable size coastal laggon and quite rich in bird terms, allowing to watch bird such as Gloosy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus), Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta), Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), Caspian Tern (Sterna caspia), Pallid Swift (Apus pallidus), Alpine Swift (Apus melba) e Woodchat Shrike (Lanius senator).

Quinta do Lago (East)

To get to the Quinta do Lago (East) also known as São Lourenço Lake it's advisable to go go to the GPS point "Caminho Aves Quinta do Lago".

To reach the bird hide you'll have to follow the dirth road (red on the photo) and go through the blue path. The path is on dirt flooring but without any obstacles. The bird hide is a 2 storey wooden building and the ground-floor is accessible to a wheelchair.
 

Quinta do Lago (west)

To get to the Quinta do Lago (East) also known as São Lourenço Lake it's advisable to go go to the GPS point "Caminho Aves Quinta do Lago".

To reach the bird hide you'll have to follow the dirth road (red on the photo) and go through the blue path. The path is on dirt flooring but without any obstacles. The bird hide is a 2 storey wooden building and the ground-floor is accessible to a wheelchair.

Vilamoura (South)

The bird hide is located on Parque Ambiental de Vilamoura and to get the is advisable to go to the GPS point called "Caminho Aves Vilamoura" and follow th path indicated in red. On the end of this track you'll find a small dirth road that gives access to the bird hide entrance. Near this area there's a small area where you can leave you car and from this spot there's a boardwalk with some irregularities but allowing easy wheelchair access to the hide.
 

Vilamoura (North)

This bird hide is located on Parque Ambiental da Vilamoura and to reach it is advisable to follow the direction to the GPS point called "Caminho Aves Vilamoura" and go through the path indicated in red and then follow the blue one. On the end of it there's a dirt road that gives access to the bird hide. There's no parking lot but you can leave your car along the path and follow the dirt road which has a few roughness. The access the bird hide there's a small dirt ramp but the entrance has a small step and wooden barrier that compromises the entrance.
 

Salgados (East)

To get to the bird hide east of the Lagoa dos Salgado it's advisable to leave the car on the parking lot on Praia Grande (beach) on the GPS point called "Lagos dos Salgados Park". From here you'll follow the boardwalk that runs the southern bank of the lagoon to the bird hide. The get access to it there are some obstacles such as steps and vegetation, so it's advisable the help for a wheelchair user.
 

Salgados (West)

The western bird hide at Lagoa dos Salgados and to get there it's advisable to leave the car on the Praia Grande (beach) parking lot on the GPS point "Lagoa dos Salgados Park". From here you'll follow the path which has some sandy areas but it's easy to get through but if you're in a wheelchair you'll need help to get to the bird hide.
