The Algarve due its location and habitat diversity supports a high bird diversity which makes that a lot of foreign birdwatcher visit the reagion every year in search of the local specialties, mainly water birds.
On the 3 main bird hides of the region it's possible to see a great number of species. Some are presented next:
Quinta do Lago
The Quinta do Lago bird hides mainly the one near the Sao Lourenço lagoon allow you to see almost every species of ducks present in the Algarve being Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina) on of the most interesting ones. It's also one of the best spots to watch Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio porphyrio), Hoopoe (Upupa epops), Azure-winged Magpie (Cyanopica cyana) e Cetti's warbler (Cettia cetti).
Vilamoura
Both bird hides at Parque Ambiental de Vilamoura are located near lagoons with rich aquatic vegetation making them good to see ducks such as the rare Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca) and other species are easy to see as the Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) or the Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus).
Lagoa dos Salgados
Lagoa dos Salgados it's a reasonable size coastal laggon and quite rich in bird terms, allowing to watch bird such as Gloosy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus), Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta), Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), Caspian Tern (Sterna caspia), Pallid Swift (Apus pallidus), Alpine Swift (Apus melba) e Woodchat Shrike (Lanius senator).
